What Happens During a Mobile Towbar Fitting?

If you've never had a towbar fitted before, it's natural to wonder what the process actually involves. Do you need to be home? How long does it take? Will the car be off the road?

The good news is that a mobile towbar fitting is one of the more straightforward jobs you can book — and having it done at your home or workplace makes it even easier. Here's a step-by-step look at what happens.

Step 1: Getting a Quote

The process starts with a quote. To give you an accurate price, we'll need to know:

• Your vehicle make, model and year (and ideally the registration)
• What type of towbar you'd like — fixed flange, fixed swan neck, or detachable swan neck
• What electrics you need — a 7-pin single socket, 13-pin single socket, or twin electrics for caravans

Step 2: Preparing for the Day

There's very little you need to do before the fitter arrives. A few things that help:

• Make sure the vehicle is accessible. We need to work around the rear of the car, so parking on a drive or a quiet road with space on both sides works well
• The car should be clean and dry around the rear bumper area — not essential, but it makes things easier
• You don't need to be present the entire time, but someone should be on hand at the start and end to check the work and hand over the keys

Step 3: The Fitter Arrives

The fitter will arrive in a fully stocked van carrying the parts specific to your vehicle. Towbar kits are vehicle-specific — the brackets, the wiring harness, and in some cases the software — so everything will have been prepared in advance for your exact make and model.

They'll introduce themselves, take a quick look at the rear of the car to confirm the condition and access, and then get started.

Step 4: Fitting the Towbar

The physical towbar installation typically takes between one and two hours for most vehicles, though some models take a little longer — particularly those with more complex bumper assemblies.

The process generally involves:

• Removing the rear bumper cover to access the chassis
• Bolting the towbar brackets directly to the vehicle's chassis mounting points
• Refitting the bumper cover, trimming or fitting the supplied cut-out if required
• Fitting the towball, with the correct torque applied

Everything is bolted through manufacturer-specified chassis points — the same points used by vehicle manufacturers when they fit towbars from the factory. This means the installation is as solid as it gets without affecting the structural integrity of the car.

Step 5: Fitting the Electrics

Once the towbar is in place, the wiring is fitted. For most modern vehicles this involves routing a wiring loom from a connection point in the boot or rear lighting area through to the towbar socket at the back.

On many vehicles, the wiring kit also needs to be coded to the car using a laptop and diagnostic tool. This tells the vehicle's system that a trailer socket is present, and enables features like trailer lighting checks, parking sensor deactivation, and — on some models — trailer stability control. This typically adds 15–30 minutes to the job.

Step 6: Testing Before Sign-Off

Before the fitter packs up, everything is tested:

• The towball is checked for correct fitting and torque
• The trailer socket is tested with a test board to confirm all circuits are working — indicators, brake lights, reversing light, fog light, sidelights, and number plate light
• Any vehicle-specific coding is confirmed and any related dashboard functions are checked

You'll be shown the completed installation and the test results before anything is signed off. If there's anything you want to check or ask about, this is the moment to do it.

Step 7: You're Good to Go

The whole visit — from the fitter arriving to driving away — is typically between two and three hours for a standard installation. Some simpler jobs are quicker; some complex vehicles or twin-electrics installations take a little longer.

You'll receive confirmation of what's been fitted, and the towbar will be ready to use immediately. There's no curing time, no waiting period — you can attach a trailer or bike rack that same day.

Do I need to take time off work? Not necessarily. Many customers book a morning slot and the car is ready well before lunch. You just need to be home to hand over the keys and check the work at the end.
